There are so many hidden gems in the not-so-little town of Bethlehem, and some not so hidden. Here are 5 ways for anyone to enjoy the city as much as we do here at HBMS.
1. Fall in love with the food.
With new restaurants opening frequently throughout the year, Bethlehem has become a hot-spot for affordable dining that feels high-end. On the north side you have places like Tapas on Main, known for it’s authenticity and one-of-a-kind sangria; Main Street’s latest, Cachette, which offers zesty and sweet crepes; The Brick, who set the bar in Bethlehem when it comes to the best pizza-check out their food gallery; and we can’t forget to mention Voracious, who seem to have perfected the art of the panini- they are also cost-friendly. On the South Side you can find places like The Bookstore Speakeasy, a (purposefully) well-hidden restaurant in the style of a 1920’s speakeasy, with strict yet entertaining house rules; Blue Sky Cafe, whose delicious and cost effective menu make it the perfect place for your breakfast and lunch break; and Molinari’s, where the warming hospitality matches their exquisite Italian cuisine. Bethlehem also celebrates Restaurant Week every year, featuring these places along with many other popular spots.
2. Fall in love with the nightlife.
Bethlehem’s life after dark has vastly expanded and improved in recent years. On the north side, historically the most popular destination has been Brew Works, which pays homage to the Bethlehem Steel and all its workers. Now, it features the Steelgaarden Lounge, an attachment to the restaurant which has more of a hangout feel than most other places. Another northern option is Roosevelt’s, a favorite among college students because of their frequent specials. When it comes to the southern part of the city, nightlife is booming. Of course there is the Sands Casino, which has increased tourism significantly since its opening. For those who prefer the bar scene, Molly’s Irish Grille and Sports Pub is always a fine choice. Ranging from a delicious menu to drinks and specials, Molly’s has something for everyone. The latest addition to Bethlehem’s sports bar scene is Taps Tavern, whose draft beer selection exceeds far beyond the expectations, including mead on their draft menu.
3. Fall in love with the culture.
Culture and the arts are a vital component to Bethlehem’s community. In fact, FIG’s fall issue was solely dedicated to the arts. There are so many ways to experience the diversity here in Bethlehem. First, check out the exhibitions at the Banana Factory and our very own Kemerer Museum. Next, be sure to see shows put on at the Zoellner Arts Center and Touchstone Theater. The best way to immerse yourself in the culture of the city is to attend it’s many, many festivals. From Veg Fest, to Oktoberfest, to the new-kid-on-the-block Italian Fest, there is always a celebration. Among the most popular are Musikfest, which is a three-way hit with food, music and crafts, and Celtic Festival, which has become one of the “largest Highland Games and Festival in North America,” according to their website. We also love Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites’ very own Blueberry Festival; The sweetest festival of the summer has been turning tongues blue since 1986!
4. Fall in love with Christmas (Bethlehem style).
In 1936, Bethlehem, PA was deemed Christmas City, USA- and not for nothing. Each year, thousands of visitors come to see the city decorated in lights and bustling with holiday activity. Start with Christkindlmarkt, the perfect place to spark your holiday cheer with perfect gift ideas, decorations, activities, and a chance to hang out with St. Nick! Don’t miss out on the Live Advent Calendar that happens each week outside our Schropp Dry Goods Shoppe, attached to the 1810 Goundie House. Other popular holiday activities include putzes and shoppes, Christmas at SteelStacks and the Christmas City Village. HBMS takes Christmas to the fullest. We have experiences ranging from Christmas tours like Christmas City Stroll and the Bethlehem by Night Bus Tour, to horse-drawn carriage rides, to our Christmas tree exhibit; this year’s exhibit theme is Trees of Many Colors. Also look out for our docents on Main, who will be strolling the streets, caroling and talking to visitors about Christmas in Bethlehem!
5. Fall in love with the history (our personal preference).
