Antique clock expert helps to repair Historic Bethlehem Museums and Sites’ many clocks
Ray Snouffer, a Hagerstown-based art and antique consultant, has volunteered to help rescue and restore some classic timepieces for Historic Bethlehem Museums and Sites. The clocks are located at the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts and the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem.
Snouffer is an expert on tall case clocks, early shelf clocks, and uses his vast knowledge to also serve as a clock repair specialist. He is a member of the National Clock and Watch Association, a group committed to educating the public about timepieces and the science behind it.
Two clocks he is attending to are works from John Samuel Krause and Jedediah Weiss. Both artists lived in Bethlehem. Snouffer has determined that both clocks were made between 1805-1815.
Snouffer is also an artist, specializing in watercolor painitings. He has entered works in Berkeley Arts Council’s (Berkeley, West Virginia) annual art competition. His 2022 work “Reflections of Calm” received an honorable mention.
Snouffer is an instructor of 19th century watercolor technique from beginner to advanced.
Kaitlyn Schock is a student intern from Kutztown University and a contributing writer for Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites.
