Spring and Summer at the Historic Burnside Farm

April 26th, 2024 |

Now that warmer weather has arrived in the Lehigh Valley, the Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites staff is preparing for spring and summer programming at Burnside Farm. Join us as we kick off FREE Saturdays at Burnside on May 4, 2024. As spring winds down and summer fully blooms, admission on the first Saturday of each month through October is free and open to the public.

Curious about what makes Burnside Farm special? Besides the serene outdoors and a glimpse into colonial history, we offer a host of unique experiences that you won’t find anywhere else!

  • Visitors are welcome to enjoy monthly cooking demonstrations in the Burnside Summer Kitchen. The kitchen was built in 1825 to keep the farmhouse cooler during the warm months. Attendees can look forward to “receipts” (aka, recipes) with asparagus, eggs, and farmer’s cheese—similar to cottage cheese. June will feature butter-making, and July is a mid-summer favorite for children and adults alike: ice cream!
  • Prepare to observe different types of ketchup found in colonial Bethlehem throughout the season (not available for tasting). Since no tomatoes were farmed in this territory centuries ago, colonial settlers got creative when formulating ketchup. You will surely discover which unique fruits and vegetables made up the now-classic condiment over 200 years ago.
  • As part of our dedication to providing fresh, locally grown produce, we’re thrilled to offer the ‘You Point, We Pick’ program at Burnside Colonial Farm. This unique initiative allows you to handpick your own organically grown vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers in exchange for a donation. It’s our way of sharing the farm’s bounty with you and promoting the value of locally sourced food.
  • You can also take a tour of the historic Burnside House when you stop by!
  • Children and families always have a great time at Burnside Colonial Farm. Kids love learning about colonial kids’ chores and deciding who has it easier! Each Saturday will feature a different craft activity for children and families to complete together:
    • May 4: Create your own Model Habitat
    • June 1: Make your own Weathervane
    • July 6: Make your own Bee Hotel
    • August 3: Create your own Walking Paper Horse
    • September 7: Make your own Corn Husk Doll
    • October 5: Make your own Decorated Bird Feeder

We are excited to welcome you to Burnside Farm for another season of learning and fun! Mark your calendars today and be sure to join us on May 4th for this year’s first Saturday at Burnside.
