Costumed Guide

Position Summary & Objectives

Costumed Guides provide positive visitor experiences by delivering high-quality tours at our museums and historic sites. Costumed Guides are responsible for learning and presenting tour script information in a way that makes it easy for visitors to understand and enjoy their visit and are responsible for ensuring that public tours and scheduled private tours match visitor expectations. Costumed Guides assist with the mission of HBMS in bringing history to life by educating the public about Bethlehem’s rich heritage.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Learn and lead historic walking tours and engage visitors through scheduled public bus tours.
  • Provide scheduled public group tours for visitors of all ages and may be called upon to conduct private tours.
  • Provide visitors with information regarding the visitor experience at the museum and promote current & upcoming tours, exhibits, and events at all HBMS sites.
  • Provide information regarding the mission and vision of HBMS and promote ongoing activities at other HBMS sites.
  • Will provide visitors with information about membership and promote membership opportunities.
  • Will work to facilitate continued learning opportunities for visitors.
  • Will provide general availability for each month in advance.
    • When asked to be a guide when a private tour is scheduled, Costumed Guides are expected to provide a prompt response to indicate availability for that tour.
    • Costumed Guides are responsible for finding a replacement Guide if they are unable to perform a tour that they had previously confirmed they were available for.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience as a docent or tour guide (preferred).
  • Able to speak to diverse groups of visitors of all ages.
  • Strong time management skills to ensure tours are the right length and match visitor expectations.
    • Ability to adapt to unexpected changes to tour route or timeframe may be required.
  • Enthusiasm when speaking with visitors to promote positive visitor experiences.
  • Ability to handle difficult visitor questions (pertaining to difficult/sensitive topics).

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Duties of this position are performed in a museum setting as well as at various HBMS historical sites. The position frequently requires standing, sitting, bending, walking and climbing stairs. Some tours require being outside in various weather conditions (heat, cold, non-hazardous precipitation, etc.).
