Lehigh Valley Live: Want a free history lesson? Maybe see some art, or a mine? Mark your calendars for Museum Day.

September 6th, 2019 |

General Harry C. Trexler’s assets today are worth about $130 million. You can learn all about his life and how he amassed that fortune for $0.

Trexler is the subject of one of many exhibits currently on display at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, one of more than a dozen regional participants in the 15th Museum Day on Sept. 21. The annual celebration is put on by Smithsonian Magazine.

Your free entry requires a ticket, which can be downloaded at Smithsonian.com/museumday, which is good for two people.

At the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, tickets are limited to one per email address and give you the opportunity to check out all that the Allentown attraction has to offer. Currently, the museum has four special exhibits on display: “The American Presidency,” “The Life & Legacy of General Harry C. Trexler,” “Native Americans: A Diverse & Evolving History,” and “How the Lehigh Valley Changed America.” There’s also an exhibit featuring a general overview of Lehigh Valley history.

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on that Saturday.

Not going to be in town? If you’re traveling for whatever reason, you still have a chance to take advantage of Museum Day. Museums around the country are participating in the initiative, which saw over 450,000 ticket downloads last year. All participating museums can be found at Smithsonian.com/museumday/search.

Within about 30 miles of Bethlehem, the participating museums listed as of Thursday, with their hours that Saturday, are:
