It’s the perfect attraction for the Christmas City — a Live Advent Calendar.
Historic Bethlehem’s 14th annual event — the only one of its kind in the country — runs through Dec. 23 at the 1810 Goundie House on Main Street.
Every day at 5:30 p.m., people gather outside the building. A person is chosen to knock on the door. When the door opens, a representative of a local business associated with the Downtown Bethlehem Association comes out to hand out gifts to the audience. Sometimes there is entertainment.
This weekend, participating businesses will be Christmas City Ornaments Shoppe (Thursday), Lehigh Valley with Love (Friday), Domaci (Saturday) and Hand Cut Crystal (Sunday). The Live Advent Calendar is a take on the tradition of Advent Calendars or Christmas Countdown Calendars for children and families during the holiday season. With a traditional Advent calendar, a door is opened each day as Christmas nears.
The attraction is a partnership with the Downtown Business Association. It provides an opportunity to highlight the Goundie House, which is the oldest building on Main Street, and complements other Historic Bethlehem holiday attractions, such as horse-drawn carriage rides, city tours, free photos with Santa, a Window Decorating Competition and this year’s new Clash of the Carols.
