Morning Call: Get Ready to Fall for Historic Bethlehem’s 5th Annual Apple Days at Burnside Plantation

September 7th, 2018 |

As the kids return to school, another fall-is-around-the-corner tradition gets underway.

Historic Bethlehem’s 5th Annual Apple Days, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9 at Burnside Plantation, offers family fun, cooking and colonial demonstrations, barn and house tours, live music, culinary contests and (of course) tons of apple-centric foods to enjoy.

Here are some highlights:

Food: You’ll have your pick of delicious apple treats, including doughnuts, pies, dumplings, fritters, muffins, strudels, hand-dipped caramel apples, cider and hard cider from Bethlehem’s Hardball Cider.

Culinary contests: See who has the best apple dessert. The adult contest will be at 1 p.m. Saturday and the kids’ contest will be at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Doughnut-eating contest: Those of you with a bottomless stomach can try to win bragging rights in this contest for kids and adults at noon both days.

Demonstrations: Apple-themed recipes will be demonstrated in the culinary tent. Other demonstrations include the colonial cider press and high horsepower wheel, Colonial Shake-N-Make Butter and colonial cooking from Burnside Foodways volunteers in the Summer Kitchen. New is chainsaw carving by Todd Glatfelder.

Family fun: Children can try to get through the hay bale maze, (new), take a ride on a carousel or a pony, take a donkey-drawn wagon ride or check out the petting zoo. Other activities include apple bobbing, quill pen writing, apple T-shirt stamping, making kid and pet friendly bandannas, paper mosaics and apple puppets, and colonial dress-up. Kids can bring a favorite book or choose one to borrow and read to dogs from The Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

Live music: Enjoy performances by Hometown Fiddlers, Project 32, Billy Bauer, Tap Ties, Swingtime Dolls and Apple Days Bluegrass.

Admission: $5, ages 18 and over; free, under 18. Burnside is at Info: 800-360-Tour or HistoricBethlehem.org
