MorningCall: 27th Rooms to View House Tour: Marvel at magnificent Bethlehem homes

June 5th, 2019 |

Written by Ryan Kneller for The Morning Call

Explore beautiful Bethlehem area homes and gardens — from historic and majestic countryside retreats to newly constructed urban upscale apartments — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Historic Bethlehem Museums and Sites’ 27th annual Rooms to View House Tour offers self-guided tours of about a dozen properties, including one of the earliest Northampton County barns, built around 1751 and renovated into a contemporary game room.

Picturesque properties in Lower Saucon Township include Black River Farms, a family-owned sustainable vineyard and winery, home to 14 acres of grapevines, fruit trees and vegetable gardens; a 1971 home nicknamed “Apple Tree House,” featuring

aging apple trees and a kitchen garden of herbs, perennials and summer vegetables; and a stately Tudor Revival home showcasing mahogany-lined walls and deep coffered ceilings.

In south Bethlehem, you can tour two of the apartments and the rooftop terrace of the new Five10Flats apartment complex, offering fantastic views of the nearby SteelStacks campus.

Other highlights include three north Bethlehem properties: a Federalist-style home filled with eclectic decor reflecting the owners’ lives and international travels — mainly Asia, the Middle East and Europe; a Market Street Cottages residence showcasing several antiques, including needlepoint chairs, a Queen Anne-style cedar chest and family photographs in their original frames; and two units of an 1870s single-family home converted into condominiums, featuring exquisite moldings, Art Deco accents and local art.

After the tour, enjoy a wine and cheese reception and Marche Maison pop-up shop, with vintage-inspired jewelry, housewares, furniture and more, in the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts garden, 427 N. New St., Bethlehem.

Tickets: $40, available at historicbethlehem.org, 800-360-8687 or at Historic Bethlehem Visitor Center, 505 Main St.
