In Time’s Convert the action shifts to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania when the Continental Congress abandoned Philadelphia as the British moved to occupy the city.  The scene opens with John Adams (yes, he was there) being taken to task by the Chevalier de Clermont (Matthew).  Bethlehem offers readers some insight into the heterodox European religious communities in Pennsylvania, especially the Moravians.  One of the singular features of colonial Pennsylvania was its founder, William Penn’s, commitment to religious tolerance.
