The Morning Call: Homemade kiffles, pecan tossies and more: We tell you how to get a taste of the holidays

December 6th, 2021 |

Written by Jennifer Sheehan for The Morning Call

The Lehigh Valley is full of legendary amateur bakers.

But there’s a select few that are well-known and hard to beat at annual culinary contests such as the Allentown Fair and even the prestigious Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites is once again selling her kiffles as well as a few other sweet treats through its online store. They make great gifts to bring to an office or neighborhood holiday party — or maybe as a gift to yourself. (You deserve it). The sale benefits the HBMS.

Here are the details:

Kiffles

What’s a kiffle you ask? Delicate, traditional pastries that originated in Hungary. The pastry base is usually cream cheese, butter, eggs and flour filled with variety of deliciousness, like lekvar (prune), apricot, raspberry or walnut.

Flavors: You get a dozen of Seibert’s kiffles. Pick the flavor — apricot, raspberry or walnut.

How much: $15

Pecan tossies

What’s a tossie? It’s like a tiny pie with a buttery crust stuffed with a brown-sugar pecan filling. These tossies are made by the Bake-A-Re of Danielsville.

How much: A dozen for $15

Also in gluten-free: A dozen, $15

Walnut roll

What’s a walnut roll? Basically it’s a like a blanket of tasty pastry, slathered with a sugary walnut filling and folded up into a log. Country Cottage Bake Shop in Tamaqua makes those in the sale and uses a third generation Slovakian recipe for their hand-rolled treats.

How much: $18

How to order:

So before we get to the ordering info, it’s worth mentioning that these sell-out quickly. If you’re considering making an order, do it quickly.

Ok, now onto how to order:

To order online: store.historicbethlehem.org/. Scroll down to the item you’d like to order. Select your pick-up date. Then proceed to payment.

When it comes time for your selected pick-up date, go to the Visitor Center at 505 Main St., Bethlehem with your printed email confirmation. Note: Your order must be picked up on the day you choose during the Visitor Center’s open hours otherwise they will go back into circulation.
